(v) Career Guidance
Resources for Guidance Counsellors
In order to highlight the importance of foreign languages – both for cultural and social awareness and for
career opportunities, based on languages themselves or in combination with other disciplines guidance
counsellors were targeted with resources which are also designed to ensure that the videos above would be
accessible to students in schools. An activity for TY, 5th and 6th year students to be used in class was devised to
facilitate easier use of the Languages Connect videos in the classroom.
The activity promotes the value of languages in the world of work and develops student awareness of career
possibilities if they keep on a language, as well as facilitating access to the videos. This is available online via
languagesconnect.ie and a hard copy was sent to every career guidance department in schools. An interactive
online activity for students has been designed with the aim of encouraging students to reflect on the
importance of languages in their lives and the opportunities that
having a language can bring to their future careers. As a result of
doing the activity students are able to define their language
profile. These activities were designed following the NCGE: A
whole school guidance framework document.
Career Guidance Fairs
PPLI took part in several School Careers Evenings across the
country promoting languages as a skill which can complement
any career. A leaflet on using foreign languages in a variety of
careers for students was also developed and distributed at
these events.
Relevant information and updates
PPLI has contributed descriptions on the added value of
having a foreign language in each and every sector on the
CareersPortal website so that a student can find out how a
language can help whether they are interested in Fashion
and Beauty, Computers and ICT, Law and Legal, or any other
sector. Videos created as part of the Languages Connect
campaign provide access to real life examples of people
who have benefited from having a foreign language in the
different sectors. PPLI also contributes to a monthly
newsletter here.
