(vii) #ThinkLanguages
As part of the Languages Connect awareness raising campaign #ThinkLanguages was held - this is an event
which encourages students to become aware of how important languages are for a variety of careers that are
not traditionally associated with languages, to choose a language for Leaving Certificate, and to provide them
with an opportunity to enjoy the experience of language learning as well as engaging with a variety of cultural
experiences.
‘I consider the learning of Foreign Languages as a key priority, particularly post-Brexit,
and we all need to encourage our students to take up and continue learning foreign
languages so that Ireland can meet the increasing demands of a global economy.’
Minister Joe McHugh at #ThinkLanguages
On 20th November 660 students and teachers were welcomed to
#ThinkLanguages in Dublin Castle. They listened to James Hart, a
Munster rugby player, who thanks to his heritage language in the
home, his French classes at school and a stint in France during his
Transition Year, was able to confidently step into his job as a rugby
player in France at Grenoble and Racing 92. He worked for two
French rugby clubs before returning to Ireland to play for Munster
Rugby. Students were delighted to be able to have their photo
taken with him afterwards.
