Showcase and promote more good practice
Spotlight on Schools
Spotlight on Schools was launched in September in order to showcase and promote good practice of
language teachers across the country not only within the language teaching community but also within their
schools and beyond. Three spotlight items were launched in 2019.
(i) A language taster Open Day in Our Lady’s College Galway (OLCG)
During the school open day, primary school
students from around Galway were invited to
take part in activities organised by the
languages departments at OLCG. The MFL
department hoped to show these students the
wide range of languages on offer in the school
and give them a taste of each within a short
space of time. By engaging in different activities
in Spanish, French, German, Mandarin and
Polish, students became excited about the
possibility of taking up a new modern foreign
language at secondary school
(ii) Peer and Group reflection ‘in the cloud’ practised by MFL teachers in Limerick Educate Together Secondary
School.
The aim of this project was to engage students in using VLEs to share resources they create with their
peers. The project provided evidence of student learning using digital technologies creatively, student
reflection, and giving and receiving peer feedback. It also provides a means of documenting students’
learning.
(iii) A video which showcases the introduction of the short course in Lithuanian and how it benefits not only
the students involved but also the school community. https://vimeo.com/331034038
