Training for Foreign Language Assistants (FLAs)
and Co-operating Teachers (CTs) (1.C.3)
Action Progress
This was introduced for the first time in October. The training was provided as an evening workshop, followed
by a webinar, to be followed by a further evening workshop to foster collaboration between CTs and FLAs
from the start of the year. The webinar was designed to respond to the needs of CTs and FLAs as observed
during the feedback from the first training session.
The focus was on the role of the language assistant and the co-operating teacher and resources that
incorporate FLA in examples of best practice. The training focused on collaborative planning for the year and
encouraging both FLAs and CTs to understand perspectives and priorities of the other.
Training
was provided
in seven locations:
Impact
Cork; Donegal; Dublin (x2); Galway;
Limerick; Navan; and Limerick
and
71 attended
Session One.
Feedback from FLAs
“It was very helpful to hear from the CTs what
they expect from us; It was such an interesting

session. I learned a lot of new ideas and
now I know how I can improve
my task as a FLA”
Feedback from CTs
“I think this is a good activity for teachers to reflect on the
age/profile of an assistant and their work experience to
date. it made me think of possible issues the FLA was
facing, we are all so busy in schools that sometimes we
forget to think about all that may be going on; As always,
the best advice comes from other teachers so talking to
them and their FLAs gave us as many ideas as we gave
them; Finally, I have an idea about what my role as a
language assistant is really about. I found out
that I can do a lot more than I expected.”
