CPD for New and Heritage Language Teachers
In June 2019, PPLI hosted a 1-day training day for teachers of new and heritage languages. 24 teachers of
Japanese, Russian, Polish, Lithuanian and the newly introduced languages, Korean and Portuguese attended.
The main focus of the day was on active teaching methodologies including the use of mini-whiteboards in
the MFL classroom, pair and group work and formative assessment.
During the afternoon session, teachers were split into groups and more targeted sessions were delivered
based on their professional needs. For Polish teachers, the focus was strategies for active reading; for
Japanese teachers, the focus of the session was on pre-intermediate teaching of Hiragana, Katakana and
Kanji; and for Russian, Korean and Portuguese teachers, the focus was on the use of the Target Language in
the TY context.
