Next Steps
Schools which received funding are obliged to provide exchange reports, which will inform future exchanges
and best practice. Follow-up with schools participating in school exchanges will also inform good practice
and provide useful information and support for other schools interested in facilitating exchanges.
1.E.3 CLIL
Action Progress
In March 2019, PPLI in conjunction with Dr CĂ©line Healy (Maynooth University) began a medium-scale pilot
project to train a group of 15 MFL teachers of French and Spanish to deliver two TY modules based on the
Content and Language Integrated Learning or CLIL approach, a methodological approach that teaches
content subjects (e.g. history, geography) through a foreign language. Teachers applied through an online
application launched through PPLI social media channels.
In order not to limit access to the pilot, content was chosen from subjects that the MFL teacher might have
had experience of teaching or could easily adapt to their teaching. The chosen content was Well-being and
Fair Trade and resources were procured from Languages for Europe (LFEE), an organisation based in Scotland,
who provide Erasmus+ training for CLIL teachers across Europe.
Teachers were invited to three face-to-face CPD sessions in Maynooth and Cork in which they were
introduced to the theory and methodologies associated with CLIL teaching. Teachers were also issued with a
CLIL Portfolio containing supplementary supports including a list of CLIL teacher competencies produced by
the European Centre for Modern Languages to support their own development. In subsequent training
sessions, teachers supported the creation of guidelines for schools interested in introducing CLIL to their
schools, shared best practice and recorded an introductory video to CLIL to be launched in 2020.
This was further supported by the creation of a Virtual Community of Practice that was established to
facilitate communication between teachers across the country.
