Russian (2.C.1)
Action Progress:
Transition Year Russian is taught by eight PPLI Russian teachers in 17 schools in Dublin, County Galway,
Waterford and Offaly. This year in total 902 students have had a chance to sample Russian during TY. In Offaly
LCVP Russian is also offered. In addition, PPLI delivers Leaving Certificate Russian Saturday School classes in
Dublin, Galway City and Limerick. Dublin Saturday School, where numbers have been growing, caters for 131
students and Galway and Limerick Saturday Schools for 30 students. PPLI Saturday Schools enhance
supporting heritage languages as Leaving Certificate Russian is largely studied by heritage language
speakers.
Impact
PPLI Russian Saturday Schools continue to be popular. In Dublin demand has been huge, classes have been
extended to cater for the different levels. Extension of class time is also being considered for PPLI Galway and
Limerick Saturday schools to cater for various levels. Russian is a Leaving Certificate subject which produces
the highest rate of H1s, giving heritage language speakers an opportunity and an incentive to maintain their
home language and acquire literacy skills in it .
‘I greatly enjoy and
benefit from the Russian course
and it helps me connect with my
heritage and improve my language
skills. Every class we learn something
new and atmosphere is
always lovely.’
‘This course has helped
me as it gave me a greater
understanding of the layout of the
LC exam. It also focused on both
the cultural and grammatical
aspect of the exam which I
found useful.’
‘I would highly
recommend learning
Russian.’
Russian was introduced for the first time as a Junior Cycle short
course, a TY module, and Leaving Certificate subject in St Oliver’s
Community College in Drogheda.
