Bringing Languages to life – Rugby World Cup Japan September 2019
The Rugby World Cup was an opportunity to encourage engagement with foreign languages, and to deliver
the message that language learning is accessible and fun for all. A pocket-sized Japanese Survival Guide and
an online Japanese game were created to bring languages to life for those who may have previously had no
interest in languages in general or exposure to Japanese language in particular. By encouraging people to
learn a few words, they were more likely to ‘try’ out all the essential rugby words and phrases as well as
learning about Japanese letters, numbers and even emojis!
A lesson plan which incorporated elements of the primary geography
curriculum was created in order to support primary schools with using
the resources effectively in their classes. This focussed on developing
awareness of people living in other areas, learning about different
cultures and customs, and using the leaflet and online lesson to
become aware of another language and learn some language of
another country.
