Guidance resources
PPLI contributes regularly to the NCGE publication Guidance Matters and IGC Newsletter ‘Guideline’. PPLI has
also been contributing monthly to the Careers portal Newsletter received directly by 4,000 Guidance
professionals.
An online activity which can be used as part of a guidance counsellors’ class or by students on their own was
created as follow-up to the lesson plans and resources created in 2018. In this activity, students are
encouraged to reflect on the place of languages in their life and look at skills acquired when learning a
language and the relevance of these skills in any sector. A language profile is prepared and is available to use
at the end of the activity.

A member of the team attended the IGC conference in April 2019 in Letterkenny which was a great
opportunity to meet guidance counsellors and talk to and inform them about Languages Connect supports
available to them and their students.
Course Finder for College Courses with Languages
PPLI collaborated with Careers Portal to add a search facility to the course finder to make it possible to search
all courses with a language element. This is the first time a search function is available that allows a student to
search courses that include languages when languages aren't part of the course title. It also serves to provide
visibility to the possibilities of keeping up foreign languages in third level, or the possibilities of taking up a
new language.
The tool also highlights courses that students might not expect to include a foreign language element,
therefore making the continuation of language study more appealing and accessible to a wider, more diverse
group of students. For example, a student considering Mathematics at third level might not have considered
the possibility of taking a language with that, but the Foreign Language filter reveals a number of courses
offering Mathematics and a foreign language.
