PPLI Annual Report (2019) - Flipbook - Page 7
A new team of language champions were engaged to promote foreign languages at a host of events at which
there were 55,000 students in attendance. PPLI staff spent 142 days at events in general which also included
events for teachers and five principals’ conferences. Impressions on social media are now in the millions. We
had 3,000 students at a much scaled up #ThinkLanguages event for TY students with 55 schools, 30 workshops
and 70 exhibitors as well as the excitement of a keynote from Hector Ó’Heochagáin.
We have continued to value collaboration with stakeholders to offer relevant expertise and support for foreign
languages education at post-primary level in Ireland. We are a member of the Foreign Languages Advisory
Group (FLAG) in the DES; we have liaised with third level language departments to promote quality teaching
that prepares their graduates for teaching in 2nd level context; we have offered language teacher subject
associations access to relevant information and expertise; facilitated the delivery of a workshop by the
European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) for key stakeholders - RELANG relating tests and examinations
to the CEFR; organised a conference in collaboration with JCT MFL for the first time; acted to facilitate relevant
embassies and government agencies in their support for languages education in schools; presented at
conferences and events; and provided input in many other areas.
