Portuguese TY Module and Leaving Certicate Saturday School classes
(2.A.6, 2.C.1)
Action Progress
After a successful pilot in counties Cork and Clare, a Portuguese TY module was introduced in six schools in
Dublin in September 2020. The exciting and interesting modules have proven to be very successful. The
Portuguese modules are offered in a range of schools including an Irish-medium school, an inner-city school
and mixed/boys/girls schools all of which have found the modules to be popular. Portuguese TY modules
continue in Cork and Clare. PPLI currently employs three Portuguese teachers.
Portuguese can be chosen as a new Leaving Certificate subject with the first LC exam to take place in 2022.
Portuguese Leaving Certificate Saturday School was launched in Dublin to cater for students who will be
among the very first cohort of students to sit the curricular Portuguese LC exam. Due to Covid-19 the classes
were conducted online.
Impact
•
TY Portuguese feedback has been very positive. The module has introduced a new language and a variety
of Portuguese-speaking cultures to students.
