Wide range of languages offered at fee-paying voluntary secondary schools
Figure 8: Languages at Junior Cycle, type of school
There are a number of factors that affect the range of languages offered at Junior Cycle. The size of the school has
a significant impact, presumably as a result of higher teacher allocation, and the larger the school the more likely it
is to offer a wider range of languages. Small and medium schools are spread evenly across the country. With the
exception of Donegal and Sligo, most of the schools that responded to the audit from the north-west were small
and medium schools, which limits the range of languages on offer in these schools in the North-West (North-West
is a geographical description which includes Mayo (West Region), Sligo (Border Region), Donegal (Border Region),
Roscommon (West Region), Leitrim (Border Region), Longford (Midlands Region), Cavan (Border Region) and
Monaghan (Border Region)). The type of school also has a significant impact on the range of languages provision
with fee-paying Voluntary Secondary schools offering the best range of languages.
