Transition year is an opportunity for schools to offer languages that are not on offer in the Leaving Certificate
programme. 25% of schools offer Chinese in Transition Year, however this course has a focus on culture rather than
language. 6% of English-medium schools offer Italian in Transition Year in contrast to 3% for the Leaving Certificate.
7% of English-medium schools, and 9% of Irish-medium schools, offer Japanese at Transition Year, and again this
drops to 4% and 6% at Leaving Certificate. 4% of English-medium schools and 6% of Irish-medium schools offer
Russian at Transition Year, in contrast to 1% and 0% at Leaving Certificate. In Transition Year, as for the Junior Cycle,
the larger the school, the better the range of languages, and fee-paying voluntary secondary schools offer the best
range of languages.
