Figure 29: Foreign languages available to students as part of the LCA Programme
The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is a distinct, self-contained Leaving Certificate programme. All LCA students
take 10 subjects, or 44 modules, including 2 modules of a Modern Language, and learning experiences are active and
practical. The LCA programme is offered in 43% of English-medium schools and 22% of Irish-medium schools, and
is more likely to be available in mixed schools than in single sex schools. None of the private schools surveyed offer
the LCA. The average number of students studying the LCA programme in English-medium schools is 18, and the
majority are studying French, followed by Spanish and German. However one school in the survey stated that they
do not offer an MFL as part of the LCA, this is obviously at odds with the statement that all LCA students take a
Modern Language.
