RUSSIAN:
The comments focus on Russian as a heritage language, but there are also a number of comments on Russian
as a useful language for a career. As with other languages, schools are more likely to consider offering it if they
already have a teacher, or an existing relationship with schools in Russia.
• Because one of our parents is teaching the Lithuanian, Russian and Ukrainian students Russian outside of school
hours
• To provide options for students who come from countries where these languages are spoken.
• One teacher could also possibly teach Russian.
• These are the languages that are currently most in demand from a career perspective
• We have a cohort of students that will take these languages for LC and we have no way to offer them tuition or
support
• Economic and political opportunities
• Meet needs of students
• The number of students we have who are of Russian background has increased over the last number of years.
Also we have close contact with the German schools in Kiev and Moscow and a school programme in Russian
would validate closed student to student cooperation between the schools.
• We have many students who can speak some Russian- I think they would like to maintain a high standard of
spoken and written language.
• There is a large eastern European cohort of students in the school at present. Many of these take their native
language as an additional subject for the leaving certificate
• We offer Russian as a TY module and have a teacher of Russian.
• Toisc an éileamh atá ann anois do na teangacha sin (Due to the demand for these languages now)
