Creating Authentic and Cross-Curricular Learning Experiences
Description of the project/activity:
This project was part of a Transition Year ‘Korean Language and Culture’ module. The unit of learning was chosen to
focus on the Korean War, taking account of,
1) students’ existing knowledge of World War I.
2) the social context at the time of the project - students have frequent exposure to information about the war in
Ukraine.
3) the influence of Korean pop culture,
particularly the Korean TV show,
‘Crash Landing on You’, the plot of
which centres around the historical
division of the Korean peninsula.
With the aim of extending students'
awareness of the language from
within
the
classroom
to
the
community and beyond, a Korean
War veteran, living in Ireland, was
invited to meet the students in
person and share his experiences of
the war.
What are the aims of the project?
The broad aims of the project are;
•
to engage with and utilise local resources, to increase the authenticity of the language classroom.
•
to create opportunities to broaden students' perspectives and understanding of the language and to relate their
knowledge to both the historical and present-day world.
In the context of this project, Korean is the language featured.
The project also aims;
•
to increase awareness of the Korean language, history and politics in the school community.
•
to encourage students to discover and communicate with Korean speakers around them.
