Spotlight on Schools, Creating Authentic and Cross-Curricular Learning Experiences
How did you plan for it?
Step 1
Review the lesson plan to establish the date, format and venue of the event. Consult with relevant stakeholders (e.g.,
Korean Embassy) and resource providers (e.g., Peaceful Unification Advisory Council of Korea) to plan.
Step 2
Investigate potential resources in the community, through personal and professional links and information provided
by stakeholders. In this case, an Irish veteran who fought in the Korean War and is currently living in Ireland.
Step 3
Plan concise and detailed logistics and procedures for the day of the event. Short and engaging sessions
accommodate the expected attention span of students and the potentially limited stamina of an ageing veteran.
Step 4
Work with colleagues in school to set up the venue. This group could comprise fellow MFL teachers, IT support for
the day and social media promotion afterwards. Arrange the seating in a U-shape format for the event to encourage
interaction between the guest speaker and the students.
Step 5
Liaise with the guest speaker to get a sense of the content and prepare quizzes with awards at the end of the guest
talk.
