Spotlight on Schools, Creating Authentic and Cross-Curricular Learning Experiences
How did you organise it?
What did the guest speakers do?
To make the presentation more engaging for students, two guests were invited to speak. The main speaker was the
veteran and another expert on the Korean War from The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council of Korea was invited
to co-host. The veteran was the main storyteller and the co-host helped with engagement between the veteran and
the students. Given the fact that the veteran was only about two to three years older than the audience members
when he joined the war, students were captivated by the his vivid memories.
What did the students do?
Before the talk, students were asked to guess what a young soldier’s life might have looked like during war and after
the talk, they asked questions about soldiers’ daily routines during war and how they coped with intense emotions
at that time, etc. Students watched a short video clip from a Korean TV show and tried to predict the ending. Post
presentation, quizzes were given to students followed by a ‘Questions and Answers’ session. At the end of the event,
students presented a gift to the veteran, to thank him for his time and for sharing his experiences with them.
What did the teacher do?
Since a veteran and an external expert have limited experience with engaging students to participate, the teacher
supported them by crafting interviewing questions. Before the talk, the teacher provided the veteran and an
external expert with information about relevant material that students had studied, what they needed to know and
what the main objectives of the project were. The teacher communicated well in advance with the veteran and
external expert about the details of the event (e.g., length, timeslot, venue, floor plan). The teacher introduced the
background information about Korean history and the Korean War and showed images of the Korean War before the
talk. To motivate students, a short clip from the famous Korean TV show, ‘Crash Landing on You’ was shown, and
students were asked to answer questions and make predictions about the ending of the show.
