Spotlight on Schools, Creating Authentic and Cross-Curricular Learning Experiences
How was the project successful?
The project allowed students to learn about the Korean War by listening to authentic stories. The event provided an
opportunity for students to envisage the life and hardship experienced by a young soldier at war through
storytelling. It drew on students' target language skills and their pluricultural competence through a simulated firstperson immersive experience. It also deepened students’ understanding of the current geo-political status of the
Korean peninsula.
Would this activity be adaptable for other MFLs?
MFL teachers could consider inviting external speakers (e.g., diplomatic officers, sports players, musicians, local
business owners) to provide authentic experiences of the target language and culture. The event involves people
from the local community and allows students to generate their own meaningful questions and thus, boost their
level of engagement.
Any additional information you would like to mention?
I would like to thank Raymonde Le Gates, Walter Coote, Elizabeth Coote and James Doyle for sharing their
experiences of war and Kevin Nam from The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council of Korea for facilitating the talk. I
would also like to thank the school for providing the venue and the opportunity for the students.
