1: Exploring Target Language Countries

Topic overview:
In this section we present a series of tasks and activities designed to awaken students' curiosity about the
language and culture they are going to learn about in the beginners' module. The tasks are also aimed at
helping students to explore language learning strategies and to tap into their existing knowledge of the
country/ies and language.
Task description
Groups have to research a speciûc tourist attraction and 8sell9 their chosen tourist attraction to the class.
• Research and compile information through the appropriate use of digital technologies about a
tourist attraction from the target country/ies.

• Brainstorm effective language learning strategies to use when reading websites written in the
target language.
• Learn about attractions they could visit on a possible trip to the target country/ies.

• Tourist attraction template (page 48).
Expected time taken
The task time can be reduced if students do their research for homework
and complete the worksheet at home

Outline
• In groups, students are given a specific tourist attraction from
the target country/ies (Neuschwanstein, Brandenburg Gate,
Cologne Cathedral, Berlin Wall, Vienna Hofburg, Mozart's
Residence, the Matterhorn, Lake Geneva etc.).
Teachers can use the carousel
methodology where groups
share each other’s tourist
attraction.
• Each group has to research information about the attraction
and complete a template.
One person from each group
stays at their table to give
information about and to
promote the tourist attraction,
while their teammates visit the
other tables to view the other
tourist attractions.
• Each group shares their tourist attraction template with the
other class groups.
• Once every group has studied the templates, the class can
vote on which attraction they would like to visit the
most/least etc. and justify their reasons.
