cancer! Skin colouring is a protection factor,
however those who have benefitted from my client
#skinnerd education will tell you that genetics and
the MC1R gene are the “burn factor” indicators consultation is king in clinics.
The Sunscreen Bill now has teeth that can action
fines of up to $600,000 on sunscreen
manufacturers who do not meet the SPF safety
standards here in NZ. However, we still need
another level of protection and an educative
measurement tool that is available to us for use in
clinic. This will come in the form of the Therapeutic
Products Bill that is currently being developed.
This will give us the tool, as salon owners and
team leaders, on whether and how to offer and
regulate sunscreen.
It will be important, in my opinion, that product
sales educators become fully cognisant in the field
of Cosmetic Chemistry and the relationship to
ingredients and the physiology of the skin with the
melanogenic story that occurs on the
#journeybeneaththeskin.
This is a melanoma glowing under the OBSERV
True UV Light – diagnosed by a dermatologist and
removed the very next day after my worried phone
call and the sharing of this clinical visual. Be
vigilant it is our duty of care!
Long gone are the days when, in their youth,
clients slapped on oils and fried themselves in the
midday sun. Our clients are better educated in
today’s world and albeit we all enjoy the sun,
clients tend to buy the sunscreen they can afford.
Until now they have had to rely on the label
specifications regarding the protection factor and
then just trial and test for results; ‘If I am not burnt
at the end of the day, I am happy’.
With winter coming we have work to do to prepare,
equip and educate our clients and their families on
sunscreens; ensuring that they are effective, tested
and used every day. Yes – we must get the
message across - protect the skin on your face,
hands, ears and décolleté every day of the year.
So what did I do to check sunblock efficacy in our
household? I gathered my partner and all 'HIS'
purchased sunblock’s to the OBSERV device. I
applied a different sunblock to each quadrant of his
face and identified the products on paper so we
could test the efficacy results!
Here is his OBSERV clinical visual seen under
the True UV light. In the above photo: as we
look at it, the professional range is on the top
left hand side and the supermarket purchased
sun blocks are on the remaining quadrants!
Effective sunblock needs to be a dark solid
shield seen under the True UV light. Yes,
fascinating and incriminating!
