Cultivating relational
capital among people
and organizations in
East Oakland
In the initial EOBHC Hub structure, the
Hub Manager assigned organizational
representatives to Work Groups. During this
period, individuals were invited to pick the
Action Team of their choice as well as to
nominate and elect its leaders to represent
the work on the LC. This autonomous and
democratic environment helped build a
shared positive experience within EOBHC,
and further strengthened relational capital. The Action Teams, mirroring two of TCE’s three new
campaign “brands,” consisted of:
• Health Happens in Neighborhoods,
• Health Happens in Schools, and
• Health Happens with Culture, Art, Storytelling & Healing
Action Teams’ progress showed great promise due to the following key ingredients:
• Having two or three co-facilitators for each Action Team, with each facilitator representing
distinct organizations and unique skillsets;
• ●Practicing authentic community, parent, and youth engagement; and
• Attempting to integrate multiple organizing efforts under one banner.
The Health Happens in Schools Action
Team showed particularly rapid
progress. Oakland Kids First, Black
Organizing Project, Bay Area Parent
Leadership Action Network, and Faith in
Action East Bay (formerly OCO) brought
their rich skills in organizing in schools
that preceded EOBHC in an attempt
to agree on a way forward. EOBHC
facilitated a series of Power Building
Workshops that built the capacity of
youth and families to engage in school
systems change in which over 75 young
people and adult allies participated.
