structure consisting of three Action Teams that fed into the LC, and a new set of LC members was
invited and supported to step in as old LC members, who had steered EOBHC through this acritical
transition, prepared to rotate out.
However, staff were hired without having a clear budget projection and these concerns were met with
what turned out to have been unjustified optimism. After a prolonged battle with budget shortfalls, in
light of core identity issues that remained unresolved, the LC made the difficult decision to downsize
and restructure the staffing. It was also at this time that LC members transitioned off and the new
team was formed to help guide EOBHC through the initiative’s final years.
With the impending sunset of EOBHC now in sight, a Transition Team took over under the leadership
of Pecolia Manigo (Bay Area Parent Leadership Action Network), Ms. Towanda Sherry (longtime
resident and beloved activist), and Dr. Noha Aboelata (Roots Community Health Center). Roots staff
members Jessica Travenia and Jamaica Sowell also joined the Transition Team during different
periods of time. Preparing for the sunset of EOBHC, two staff remained: Nehanda Imara, who was
actively involved in the early stages of EOBHC planning and formation and a representative of
Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) within EOBHC before joining as EOBHC staff, and later
Hub Manager; and with Guillermo Carrillo, who supported operations and finances.
