What have we learned, and what are the
possibilities?
“EOBHC helped people to grow into their own. And East Oakland is better
because of EOBHC.... Lots of people who didn’t see each other or hear one
another, came and learned to respect one another, and the honoring of folks
happened on a real level. Folks have moved on to other spaces, to become
leaders, doing things they’d never done.”
—Ms. Towanda Sherry, long-time EOBHC leader and beloved resident activist
As the EOBHC Learning & Evaluation team over the past five years, our job has been to lift up
EOBHC’s achievements and attempt to analyze its key ingredients of success. It has also been
our job to reflect back its shortcomings with love. We have also served as facilitators, advisors,
confidants, and coaches for dozens of individuals involved with EOBHC. With the deepest respect
for these folks, we offer frank observations, pose potentially uncomfortable questions, and share
what we see as bright possibilities for EOBHC’s next reincarnation under the care of BCZ.
