• Consolidate relational
capital among people
and organizations in East
Oakland
Cultivating relational capital has been arguably
the greatest achievement of EOBHC. And
these relationships make possible any and all
future work to build and sustain power.
The next level of depth for cultivating relational
capital must include addressing anti-Black
racism, which was a top theme lifted up during
the breakout group portion of the 2019 Power
Formation Convening that landed on the suggestion of identifying specific black and brown groups
(e.g. congregations) to be part of a listening campaign then work together on shared issues for real
collective impact, implementation, and liberation.
• Model generative
structures to advance
power building
While EOBHC is now a program of BCZ,
it may be helpful for BCZ to review the
following suggestions participants proposed
over the last five years regarding potential
roles and outcomes for EOBHC, as it may be
applicable to BCZ’s organizing work:●
• Incubate and help residents gain seats
on community advisory boards of local
government agencies.
• Make changes visible to people in
neighborhoods that multiple EOBHC
organizations contribute to, e.g.,
neighborhood block clean-ups.
• Gather and disseminate data that is
solutions-focused—we already know a lot of the problems.
• Provide training and coaching for adults to work effectively in multigenerational spaces.
• Remain consistently intentional and better at acknowledging mistakes, resolving conflicts, and
having courageous conversations, e.g., situations when partnerships among specific individuals
are not working out.
