The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the delivery of mental health services worldwide,
disproportionally affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMCIs), where the new demands
overburdened the already fragile and fragmented healthcare systems. Healthcare professionals
everywhere are struggling in their attempt to meet expanding mental healthcare needs of people of
all ages, and it is now the time for primary healthcare (PHC) to take plausible strategies to respond
to unmet needs, and this requires greater leadership and advocacy. Responding to the need of
enhancing professional capacity during these hectic times, the WONCA Working Party on Mental
Health (WWPMH) has been proactively involved in numerous training activities to support the practice
of the frontline PHC workforce worldwide. This workshop will provide an overview of WWPMH’s
approaches, focusing on efforts to build leadership among early career family doctors, to enhance the
capacity of family physicians to manage severe mental illnesses and promote the PHC workforce’s
resilience during the multiple crises of our time.
