Interview
with Ray Parker Jr.
1.
Please tell us about your background.
I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, surrounded by the
sounds of Motown. Music was always in my blood, and
I started playing guitar when I was 11 years old. By the
time I was a teenager, I was performing with local bands
and even landed a spot with Stevie Wonder. Working
with legends like Stevie and Barry White taught me the
importance of professionalism and creativity. Of course,
most people know me for the Ghostbusters theme, but
my career spans writing, producing, and performing with
incredible artists. Whether playing in the studio or touring
on stage, music has always been my greatest passion and
the thread connecting all aspects of my life.

How do you stay motivated?
Staying motivated comes from a love of music
and its ability to bring people together. I’m inspired
by the fans who tell me how my music has impacted
their lives. That connection fuels me to keep creating.
I also love challenging myself with new projects—
whether it’s writing, producing, or mentoring.
Watching young artists find their voice reminds me of
my early days, and it’s rewarding to help them grow.
Beyond music, I stay active and curious, exploring
new hobbies and experiences that spark creativity.
Life is full of inspiration if you’re open to it, and I’m
grateful to keep sharing that energy through music.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve
learned in your career so far?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the importance
of staying true to yourself. It’s easy to chase trends,
but authenticity is what resonates most with people.
My most memorable work, like the Ghostbusters
theme, came from trusting my instincts and putting
my heart into the music. I’ve also learned the value
of resilience—there are ups and downs in any career,
but perseverance is key. Surrounding yourself with
supportive people and maintaining a strong work
ethic can make all the difference. Ultimately, the
journey itself is the reward, and every experience—
good or bad—shapes you as an artist and a person.
Are there any musicians that inspire you?
Many musicians have inspired me throughout my
career. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Motown
legends were my earliest influences—they showed
me the power of blending soul and storytelling.
Later, working with Barry White, The Rolling Stones,
and other icons reinforced the importance of
craftsmanship and dedication. Today, I’m inspired by
younger artists who push boundaries and bring fresh
perspectives to music. Seeing how each generation
reinvents the art form keeps me excited about the
future. Music is a universal language, and the constant
evolution of sound and creativity is a reminder of why
I fell in love with it in the first place.
What are you currently working on?
I’m excited to be working on several projects
that reflect my journey as an artist. I’m writing and
recording new music that combines my signature
style with modern influences. Collaboration is a
big focus—I enjoy mentoring young musicians
and partnering with them on fresh ideas. Sharing
knowledge and fostering creativity in the next
generation is incredibly rewarding. I’m also performing
live, which is one of my favorite ways to connect with
fans. The energy of a live audience is unmatched.
Beyond music, I’m exploring opportunities to expand
my reach creatively, whether through film, television,
or other artistic ventures.
