NEW LONG-TERM PLANS WITH
INVESTMENT TO COMBAT VIOLENT
CRIME, KNIFE CRIME, DRUGS OFFENCES
AND COUNTY LINES CRIME
On violent crime the approach is tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime.
Tough on knife crime. Labour will put in place swift
action and stronger enforcement. Laws will also
be introduced to tackle online sites promoting and
selling machetes and dangerous knives
Tough on the causes of knife crime. We need
to tackle the causes of knife crime early and
systematically – by preventing young people being
drawn into knife crime, targeting those most at
risk of getting involved in knife crime and building
a package of support to stop them ever picking up
a knife.
As part of Labour’s wider plans nationally, I will bring
together policing, youth services, mental health
providers, schools, youth o昀昀ending teams, courts
and VCS organisations to provide early intervention.
This ‘youth Sure Start’ will provide the integrated
support needed to make communities safer.
Leicestershire’s Violence Reduction Unit is doing
impactful work, tackling and preventing violence.
I will continue to support the Violence Reduction
Unit and seek to secure additional national funding
to bolster and extend its work. The VRN’s approach,
based on a public health approach to tackling
violence and its causes, is one I support.
RORY PALMER
As Police & Crime Commissioner, I will seek to
ensure the Violence Reduction Unit is funded on
a sustainable basis to take a long-term approach
to ending and preventing violence. The causes of
violence are complex and wide-ranging. We need a
long-term, integrated and whole-system approach to
tackling violence and making our communities safer.
I recognise and understand that to tackle violence on
our streets and its causes we need sustained, longterm serious leadership from all partners, including
the Police & Crime Commissioner. My long-term
approach - thinking beyond electoral cycles - will help
underpin the public health approach to preventing
violence adopted by the Violence Reduction Unit.
I will lobby the Government and ensure our voice
is heard, to ensure long-term multi-year funding
settlements for the Violence Reduction Unit: longterm funding to underpin long-term work and secure
lasting impact.
I will actively support multi-agency work to tackle
and prevent the scourge of modern slavery, led by a
safeguarding and human rights approach. I will press
the Government for to ensure enforcement bodies
are properly resourced and co-ordinated.
SAFER STREETS & STRONGER COMMUNITIES
