HATE CRIME
Under my leadership there will be a renewed focus on tackling hate crime.
I will establish a new Hate Crime Leadership Board, bringing together partners
and people with lived experience to develop a new strategy and action plan to
end hate crime in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
In recent months we have seen 昀椀gures showing
increases in incidents of Islamophobia and antiMuslim hate and antisemitism. I have heard directly
from victims of this pernicious, awful racism. There
is no excuse for racism in our communities or on our
streets: everyone has the right to be safe.
Tackling hate crime requires sustained, determined
leadership and that’s what I will provide. I will hold
the Chief Constable and Police to account on force
wide e昀昀orts to prioritise hate crime, and bring
o昀昀enders to justice.
Over many years, I have supported and stood
alongside the LGBT+ community. As Deputy City
Mayor, I delivered emergency funding to support
Leicester’s LGBT Centre and ensured long-term
support for the annual Leicester Pride - an event I
have attended every year and been honoured to
o昀케cially open a number of times.
RORY PALMER
I have previously chaired Leicester’s Learning
Disability Partnership Board, I was proud to serve
as a Board Member for the 2009 Special Olympics
National Summer Games in Leicester and I have
worked for a national disability charity. I will always
strive to ensure public services including the police
are inclusive in everything they do. Disability
hate crime and discrimination must and will be
challenged.
I have always believed in co-production and the ‘no
decision about us without us’ principle. I will set up a
new Lived Experience Expert Panel - with a dedicated
budget - to guide and advise the OPCC and police
force on matters of disability inclusion.
