SERIOUS LEADERSHIP
FOR THE OPCC
My leadership will ensure the OPCC is a positive, outward-looking and
collaborative partner - working collegiately and e昀昀ectively with public sector
partners (like local authorities, parish councils and the NHS), as well as with
employers, SMEs and the wider private sector, faith organisations and with our
diverse and innovative voluntary and community sector.
For local organisations providing services, projects
and interventions across di昀昀erent areas of
community safety and prevention, I know that a
frustration is the short-term nature of funding.
Organisations need to plan and invest for the longer
term to secure the full potential of their impact. I
will review the way the OPCC funds organisations
and projects to take a more strategic approach. This
doesn’t mean current initiatives and programmes
will see their funding end, it means that I want to
昀椀nd ways to fund impactful work and initiatives on a
longer-term basis, with organisations able to spend
more time delivering and less time chasing funding
bids and working through complex commissioning
processes.
The role of the Police & Crime Commissioner is to
hold the Chief Constable and police to account on
behalf of the public. That solemn responsibility is one
RORY PALMER
I will ful昀椀l diligently and fairly - drawing on my years
of experience in senior roles in elected o昀케ce and in
line with the high levels of integrity and standards
we expect of those in public life. I will reinstate the
Ethics Committee to ensure improved accountability
and explore some of the complex challenges facing
policing based on the conclusions and 昀椀ndings of
national contributions, like the State of Policing
Annual Assessment.
In turn, I will be accountable to the public. I
will be visible and accessible as Police & Crime
Commissioner: holding regular ‘surgeries’, dropins and town hall meetings across the entire area.
I will report annually to each local authority and
work closely with parish councils. I will bring parish
and town councils and parish meetings together to
develop and agree the best way for them to engage
with the OPCC on local issues.
