Mast Cells degranulating and releasing their contents
Mast cells are specialized white blood cells that originate in the bone marrow and migrate to the
interface between all of our tissues and the external environment, e.g., airways, digestive tract,
skin, urogenital tract, lymphatic, and blood vessels. They are present at the blood-brain barrier.
When triggered, they release histamine and many inflammatory mediators.
The picture on the left is an electron micrograph of a mast cell
releasing its granules (depicted in black), each of which contains
hundreds of different mediators. The image on the right is a 3dimensional artist’s rendition.
