PAYMENTS INCREASINGLY REQUIRES MULTIPLE RELATIONSHIPS
Payment acceptance is a core component of any merchant business and is one that becomes increasingly
complex depending on the types of consumer, channels and countries that merchants serve. To facilitate this,
merchants are increasingly developing multiple relationships with payment partners in order to deliver their
payment acceptance strategy. The importance of seamless payments experiences is widely recognised, and
merchants are actively focused on maximising conversion and driving new revenues.
Our research shows that 94% of merchants have more than one payment partner contract. Of these
merchants, 82% have experienced an increase in the number of payment partners over the last 1-3
years – demonstrating the evolving complexity involved in payment acceptance, particularly as
merchants continue to grow.

In contrast, only 5% of merchants have only one payment partner relationship. Merchant size is an
important distinction here, as payment requirements will often vary signicantly with size. Merchants
with only one payment partner were typically smaller merchants (revenue less than USD 50M). With
lower payment volumes and reduced acceptance complexity, the benet of having more than one
payment partner can be limited.
