Samuel Ryder Academy
Extra-curricular
Opportunities
We believe education is about much more than what goes on in the
classroom. Further enrichment opportunities present themselves
outside of lesson time and students at the Academy have the
opportunity to take part in a wide variety of extended learning
opportunities. These range from regular offsite trips to the theatre, field
trips through specific subject pathways, sports tours and trips to
support language learning including Barcelona and Paris.
Before school, lunchtime and after school clubs provide more frequent opportunities
which are led by staff and students (young leaders) to support work in the curriculum
and also to enable students to learn new skills whilst having fun and making new
friends. Where students are gifted or demonstrate a particular talent in a certain area
then a range of opportunities are in place for them to maximise this potential.
A challenging sports fixtures programme provides our students with the ideal
opportunity to move their curriculum learning forward into a competitive
environment.
Buntingford First School
All students are expected to take part in any number of these enrichment activities
and are given the chance to represent the Academy on stage and on the sports field.
School colours are then awarded each year to those students who have
demonstrated dedication and excellence in a particular field.
The Academy has a thriving House system in which every student and member of
staff are drawn together in the pursuit of representing their House in a wide range of
activities. Everybody from within our Academy community has the opportunity to
play their part in representing their House in the quest for House points. This links
students from different year groups and helps them to get to know each other
across the Academy. Plentiful opportunities arise from the sports field to the
classroom providing all students with the chance to develop interpersonal skills in
leadership, teamwork, organisation and friendly competition. Specific whole school
House competitions such as the House Games Day, House Sports Day and House
Charity add an air of kudos to the success of the House system.
