Grades 9-12
This course can be taken as Honors by signing
up the first week of school with the teacher.
Course Number:
Semester 1: MU271
Semester 2: MU272
The goal of this course is for students to develop an ability to
understand, recognize, and describe various musical concepts
presented in a musical score. The skills and concepts covered are
primarily found in the Common Practice Period, the long stretch
of music history from approximately 1600-1900, including much
of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras. The course
integrates both written and aural theory including elements of
composition, chordal analysis, and performance techniques.
Instrumental or choral experience is preferred but not required.
The Symphonic Orchestra is for anyone who has had some prior
experience playing a string instrument. The Symphonic Orchestra
performs multiple concerts a year as well as some community
programs.
Orchestra members may participate in Pops
Ensembles, Chamber Ensembles and Solo and Ensemble Festivals.
With Departmental Approval, a student may take this course for
honors credit.
Additional independent work and the
performance of an accompanied solo or ensemble are just a part
of the honors credit requirement.
