volving tourism regulations
in the 90s, coupled with
the advent of the internet,
triggered rapid change in the
Seymour proposition and how it
could be marketed to potential
visitors. Travellers over this era were
offered an explosion of booking
options – from the traditional tour
operator offering to booking direct
and online, for one night or more. In
1995, Seymour Hotels took their first
internet booking in a project led by
current Managing Director, David
Seymour.
epresenting 12% of the Island’s bedstock,
Seymour Hotels Group recognises its
responsibility to lead the way in environmental
best practice. A £5m investment programme that
concluded in 2018 included a wholesale review of
the Group’s environmental footprint. A number
of changes were made, resulting in significant
improvements across the business: moving from steam
to low temperature hot water systems; switching
from gas and steam to electric induction cooking in
all kitchens; moving to LED lighting across the group;
market-leading filtration systems in the Merton
Aquadome providing the cleanest, clearest swimming
water in Jersey and state of the art air conditioning
units providing cleaner air in the Pomme d’Or hotel.
Environmental responsibility is now firmly on
the agenda and the Group remains committed to
improvements in waste management, reduction in
plastic use and the responsible sourcing of sustainable
alternatives.
A
s visitors travelled the globe, demand for new
and exciting holiday options increased.
Having opened the Merton Aquadome,
Jersey’s first indoor flume and waterpark, in 1991
the Seymour family recognised the need to keep
investing in market-leading leisure facilities. In
2008, an exciting new Flowrider was installed in the
Aquadome. The first of its kind in the UK, the surfing
facility helped ensure the Merton Hotel would remain
the number one family hotel whilst providing exciting
all-weather leisure options for guests and members to
enjoy.
The noughties saw the start of a ten-year
reinvestment and renovation project to ensure the
Group could cater for the changing needs of business
and leisure visitors. This included the introduction
of the buffet service, the opening of the Merton
Aquadome Gym and the refurbishment and unveiling
of the new Pomme d’Or Hotel façade.
Throughout the years, Seymour Hotels have focused
their efforts of evolving the business on recognising
16
the changing markets coming to the Island and
meeting the needs of locals. This saw the addition of
two new properties to the Seymour Hotels portfolio
with the purchase of the Greenhills Country House
Hotel and the Watersplash Beach Bar & Diner.
Increasing demands from the corporate market
also saw renovation of the Golden Apple Suite at the
Pomme d’Or Hotel in 2008. Providing leading business
and conference facilities, the Suite included a stage,
cutting edge technology and private bar facilities.
At the end of this decade,
recognising the huge
increase in demand for selfcatering holiday options,
the Group embarked on
the building of a totally
new visitor offering. The
Merton Suites opened
in 2011, providing the
convenience of a hotel
and the independence and
privacy of an apartment.
