DAY three
Yesterday was an adventure out west, so today is for the east.
Begin your day at Jersey Zoo and explore the park Gerald
Durrell started to house his conservation programme.
Wander through the grounds, meet the variety of animals,
and discover the details of Gerald’s legacy. With talks at each
of the animal enclosures throughout the day, there is plenty
to see and discover.
After you have said hello to all the animals, head through
the twisty lanes down to Rozel Bay. Nestled in the harbour
is a shack called the Hungry Man; home to the famous
Marshmallow Mountain, a hot chocolate covered in whipped
cream and topped with an array of chocolates, marshmallows,
and sprinkles. Stop here to enjoy a burger with a charming
view of the boats bobbing in the harbour but watch out for
the seagulls! Work off your lunch with a wander up the hill
and along the lanes, passing green fields all the way to the
headland’s edge.
Having had your fill of the charm of Rozel, continue to track
the coast and make your way to Flicquet. This bay is only
small but is worth a pitstop as you make your way to
St. Catherine’s.
St Catherine’s Breakwater is also known as the harbour
that failed. The breakwater stretches out into the sea and
was supposed to be a mirror for a pier at Archirondel.
However, in 1849 work on the southern arm at Archirondel
was halted and the 700 metres of the northern breakwater
was completed in 1855. Work on the project was then
abandoned after over £250,000 had been spent when it was
decided that the bay was not deep enough to take the new
design of steam ship. A lighthouse was built on the end of
the breakwater in 1857 and was in use until 1950. It was
replaced by a more modern unit and the original can still
be seen outside the Maritime Museum in St Helier. Though
it is no longer fit for its original purpose, St. Catherine’s
Breakwater provides the perfect opportunity to stretch
your legs and enjoy a delicious Jersey ice cream. You can’t
go wrong with a Mr. Whippy and a flake as you stroll along
the breakwater. It’s also a hotspot for fishing and quite often
dolphins can be spotted in the distance.

After your ice cream, head into St. Catherine’s Woods for
one last adventurous walk and discover a magical copse of
trees with a babbling brook before heading back into town or
to your hotel for dinner.
