It’s Book Report Time!
Mayfest 2023
As annual as chicks hatching and flowers blooming, Shelton
Upper Elementary students participated in reading, writing and
crafting all things book report. This springtime event involved
so many aspects of strong creative thinking as students shared
their books with friends.
What a beautiful Mayfest
on Friday, May 5! Students
enjoyed the pep rally,
senior salute, games,
scavenger hunts and more.
Chef Christian Moreno
and staff treated students to burgers, hot dogs and cookies.
We’ve Got the Blues
Fifth graders studied Picasso and his Blue Guitar paintings,
then did some painting of their own. This made for a beautiful
display of talent and artistry in the Gampper Fine Arts area.
Togetherness Picnic
Everything is better together in Upper Elementary. For two
weeks in October, students took turns reading a quote about
what togetherness means to them. The project culminated with
a togetherness chain made by linking students’ favorite quotes.
These weeks of thinking about what it means to be “together”
ended at the Togetherness Picnic. At the event, students
enjoyed team-building games, took part in tug of war and sang
the school song.
Poetry Jam
Students in Ms. Lisa King’s and Mrs. Cheryl Prince’s fifth-grade
advisories participated in Poetry Jam. Throughout April, which
is National Poetry Month, students wrote a variety of poems,
including the use of Midjourney AI, to complement their haikus.
Each student crafted a poem portfolio and presented their
favorites.

Fourth-grader Caleb Davis was selected for a
Scholastic Book Club virtual author visit with Tami
Charles and Bryan Collier, the author and illustrator of
“We are Here,” on Feb. 22. Caleb was chosen because
of his powerful observations and questions, as well as
his respect for the author’s writing.
Read Across America Day
Shelton students celebrated National Read Across America
Day on March 2 by listening to Pulitzer Prize winner and author
Alice Walker’s “Sweet People Are Everywhere.” In the book,
students take a trip around the
world and discover sweet people
in different countries. Mrs. Clare
Stein’s fifth-grade advisory was
so inspired by the book that they
located each country that was
mentioned on their world map.
After reading, they each shared
about a sweet person in their lives.
WinAtSocial — It’s a Win!
Upper Elementary participates in a program to teach digital
citizenship to our students. This program also includes a
component to help parents understand and participate in these
critical conversations with their child.

The Shelton Parents’ Association (SPA) provided a great
send-off into summer with a surprise: a popsicle truck!
All smiles were coated with colored syrup and chocolate!
