Essay Writing
Grades 9 – 10
Writing is an essential skill that students need to acquire. In this Essay Writing class, students review and apply the
fundamentals of writing mechanics, pre-writing, essay structure, citing resources, editing, and proofing required to
produce strong writing. Students will write several essays on a variety of topics, critique other students’ work, and
analyze the qualities of excellent writing. Computers in the Shelton mobile lab will be used during class. A 256 MB
portable USB flash memory device (pen drive, flash drive, or thumb drive) is required to save each student’s work.
Basic keyboarding skills are also required.
Essay Writing
Grades 11-12
This Essay Writing class is specifically for juniors and seniors. Students review and apply the fundamentals of writing
mechanics, pre-writing, essay structure, editing, and proofing required to produce strong essays. Among essays the
students will write, one will be a general college application essay and a response to a prompt for a scholarship essay.
Computers in the Shelton mobile lab will be used during class. A 256 MB portable USB flash memory device (pen drive,
flash drive, or thumb drive) is required to save each student’s work. Basic keyboarding skills are also required.
Summer Reading
Grades 9-11
Does your child need guidance as he or she completes their summer reading assignment? The Summer Reading
class offers students a structured, focused environment in which to complete their summer reading and any written
assignment required. Each day teachers guide and review the reading, keeping students on a rigorous schedule in order
to complete the assignment in three weeks. For this reason, student attendance and focus are important. Books are
provided to students the first day of class. A 256 MB portable USB flash memory device (pen drive, flash drive, or
thumb drive) is required to save each student’s work. Basic keyboarding skills are also required.
Note: Students in Honors English may have an additional summer reading assignment not covered in this class. See the
