Sir William Perkins's School Sixth Form Prospectus - Other - Page 8
SWPS Sixth Form students are encouraged to challenge themselves
wherever possible. We offer an impressive range of co-curricular and
super-curricular opportunities giving our students an edge with
prospective Universities and employers.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH GOLD AWARD
Sixth Formers are able to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh
Award at Gold Level. The Gold Award is a significant commitment,
however participants have the opportunity to see the world through
new eyes, learning to tackle challenges head-on and enjoy truly
unforgettable experiences. Universities see the award as an asset and
it can prove beneficial when they are deciding between applicants.
ENGINEERING EDUCATION SCHEME
Maths and Science students have the opportunity to work on live
business projects set by sponsors such as BP and Balfour Beatty.
MODEL UNITED NATIONS (MUN)
MUN provides students with an opportunity to research contemporary
issues in world affairs, practise arguing and public speaking and develop
teamwork skills. In recent years we have visited Paris and Manchester.
Our students are encouraged to set up and run any societies or clubs
that they feel would benefit them during their time at SWPS. Our
Stonewall Society and Debating Club were both instigated in this way
and launched to considerable success. We are very keen to support
students in this venture.
Sixth Formers can volunteer on the Editorial Team of the SWPS
Magazine - valuable experience for careers in journalism and the media.
This 9 week course known as “.b” (stop and breathe) has been specially
developed for young people and uses practical breathing and meditation
exercises, combined with film clips and other fun activities. Mindfulness
has been shown to improve health and wellbeing, help people to learn
more effectively, think more clearly, perform better and to feel calmer,
less anxious and improve mood and relationships.
