Stonemasons
The first sections of Prince Alfred Hospital
opened in 1882 after taking six years to
build. Many skilled tradesmen and artisans
were employed in the construction.
Some of them are pictured here working
in a makeshift shelter on site. The
Administration Block, when completed,
was a particularly grand edifice for its
time. Four-storeys high, it was finished
with an imposing façade of cream and red
bricks, sandstone embellishments and
grey granite columns. Its grandeur befitted
its role as a commemoration of the
recovery of Prince Alfred, the second son
of Queen Victoria, following an attempt to
assassinate him in Sydney in 1868.
