Men’s Ward
In the beginning there was difficulty recruiting nurses, but after
a few years the hospital had a band of suitable young women. A
dedicated nurses’ home was built in 1892. In the meantime, they
slept in unsatisfactory little wooden cottages on the hospital
grounds or in small cubicles in the Administration Block. The
Sisters in charge of a ward each had their own bed-sitting room
adjacent to the ward so that they could supervise everything, but
they too longed for a nurses’ home where they could get a good
night’s sleep.

Special Ward
In the same building as the operation theatre there were several
small, quiet wards for patients who were recovering from surgery
and were not well enough to go back to a big ward. Depending on
their condition patients might stay in one of these wards for a few
days or a few weeks. The nurse watching over the two patients in
the picture has a special uniform with a red sash across her chest.
This is to indicate that she is a theatre sister, not a ward nurse.
