Victoria Block
Operating Theatre
When the Victoria Block was built,
the hospital gained two new theatres
in addition to the original one. That
was in 1907. Surgical operations most
frequently performed around that
time were for carcinoma of the jaw,
lip and tongue, and for hydatid cysts
(tapeworm larvae) in the liver or lungs,
appendicitis, and gallstones. Ten
years later injured soldiers returning
from World War I brought many new
challenges for the surgeons to deal
with. Remarkable advances – not only
in surgery and orthopaedics, but also
in nursing, pathology research and
physical therapy – were made at Royal
Prince Alfred in response to these
complex challenges.
