University of Sydney
Commemoration Day
These women medical students are
dressed up in bonnets and parasols to
celebrate the early women graduates of
the university’s School of Medicine. They
would have known how difficult it had
been for women in the past to gain general
acceptance as doctors. Sydney University
students’ annual Commemoration Day
processions used to be something of a
highlight in Sydney. Proceeding from the
university and down along George Street,
they were noted for their witty and political
floats. The procession in 1938 must have
been long – ‘The Ladies of Medicine’ floatis
numbered 72.
