Designer in a Binder Blurred Full - Page 19

P. 1 9
For my dining room, the fabric for my DIY curtains
was my “crucial element.” I found it, fell in love
with it, and knew I had to use it.
If you haven’t decided on your “crucial element”
yet, go the fabric store. Find a piece of fabric with
several colors THAT YOU LOVE. Since those colors
work well together on fabric, they should work
well together as paint colors.
Buy a yard or so of the fabric so you can have it
with you as you choose paint colors (ideally you
will need more than just your swatch to pick
colors). The bonus is that you can use the fabric
to make something later (it can be something
simple like a pillow cover).
Include any pictures or swatches of any new
inspiration for your room’s color palette in your
clear pouch.
If it is something large, simply snap a photo of it
in natural light (all overhead lighting turned off—
artificial light will distort the colors of your item),
print the photo off and staple it to this page.
As you can see, every color you see in my dining
room curtains is used somewhere else in the
room.
Step 2: Pick your color palette.
Now you need to decide on a color palette for
your space. This step is VERY important because
color will set the entire tone for your room. Colors
have a huge impact on your mood and the type
of energy you have when you are in the space.
For example, blues and greens tend to have a
calming effect, while reds, yellows, and oranges
tend to have an energizing effect.
Use your “crucial element” to help you decide on
what color you want to paint your room. If you’ve
got patterned upholstery, a colorful rug or large
piece of artwork, pick colors you like from the
pattern. For a neutral wall paint color, look to the
pattern’s whites and beiges.

The cream color in the pattern is my wall color.
The blue color is also seen on the dresser/buffet
I painted and in the rug. The greenish color is
seen in some of the artwork.
Deciding on the curtain fabric as my crucial
element made all of the other color choices easy!
