Four Year Olds
The pick of wins through the
Queensland Winter Carnival belongs
to Impending who will stand his first
season at stud for Darley in Victoria
this spring.
Winner of the 2017 Stradbroke
Handicap, Impending returned to
Queensland with a bang by taking
out the Group 2 Victory Stakes
(1200m) at Doomben on April 28.
The son of Lonhro then produced a
fast closing second behind English
in the Doomben 10,000 (1200m).
English (Encosta De Lago x Court)
It was confirmed on July 5 that Inglis
had selected the five-year-old to run
for them in the $13 million sprint feature.
Not having raced through the
autumn, Impending was peaking
third up in the Group 1 Kingsford
Smith Cup (1350m) at Doomben on
May 26.
Settled back throughout, Impending
still had plenty of work to do at the
top of the straight.
Under an inspired ride from Damian
Browne, the Godolphin entire was
able to weave his way through
the field and edge out Le Romain
in second with pocket dynamo
Champagne Cuddles in third.
Impending’s victory returned a
Timeform rating of 122+, equal to
a Master Timeform figure he’d run
to on three prior occasions when
winning the 2016 Stan Fox Stakes
(1500m) and placing in both the
2017 Sydney Stakes and the 2018
Doomben 10,000.
Another who obtained a slot in The
Everest following her Winter Carnival
performances is the Gai Waterhouse
and Adrian Bott-trained English.
The mare secured a spot in the $13
million sprint after being selected by
Damion Flower of Jadeskye Racing.
The announcement came after
English’s strong campaign which
was highlighted by her success in
the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) on
May 12.
English produced a Timeform rating
of 118, one pound above her second
placing in the Group 1 Galaxy two
starts prior and her highest rating
since running to 121 in the 2017 TJ
Smith Stakes when second behind
Chautauqua.
The five-year-old was the first
member of the fairer sex to win
the race since Sea Siren in 2012
who returned a Timeform figure
of 121 with 2017 winner Redzel
also running to 121 when beating
Counterattack.
