Real World Math: Unexpected Events
Help students see the
relevance of math skills.
Each player begins
with a checking account
balance of $100. In turn,
each player sees how
many spaces to move and
picks up an “unexpected
event” card. According to
the card’s instructions,
the player either adds or
subtracts an amount from his or her account (e.g. receiving
a birthday gift or taking the cat to the vet). The first player
to reach the end receives a bonus amount. Players then add
up how much money they have in their accounts; the one
with the most money wins. The game board comes with
50 unexpected events cards, 20 sheets of a check register
(reproducible), and six game pieces. 2–6 players. Grades 2
and up.
