The Marketing and Membership Committee continued to
promote the association online and in the field throughout
2019. Online, the monthly webinar series continued to thrive as
Industry Relations Consultant Larry Welch incorporated guests
from the industry and academia. Notable speakers included
Gary Fitts of Kraton Polymers, TTI Senior Research Engineer
Dave Newcomb, and Asphalt Institute Regional Engineer Danny
Gierhart. In the field, Welch visited almost 400 non-member
engineering firms to promote the association and recruit new
members. His outreach also extended to several trade shows
and conferences for cities, counties, and engineers where he
served the role of both exhibitor and speaker. As an exhibitor,
he was able to educate hundreds of people about asphalt
pavement, providing informational promotional materials
including over 3,000 digital copies of the Texas Asphalt Pavement
User Guide. In addition to the webinar series and field work, the
committee was able to reach over 5,000 subscribers with the
quarterly distribution of Texas Asphalt magazine. In 2019 the
magazine underwent a redesign which garnered the association
an honorable mention from the MarCom Awards which honor
excellence in marketing and communication.
The Training and Education Committee has made great
strides in the last five years, moving from the concept stage to
becoming a large part of the TXAPA mission. Building on one
of the Association’s core values – education – the committee
has been able to create a sustainable training program which
will continue to grow and adapt. The Association’s webinar
and seminar programs have been well-received cultivating a
relationship with cities and counties and setting the stage for
the Managing Asphalt Pavements (MAPS) Conference. Designed
especially for the local government/private developer owner
segment, Chair Gary Corley believes MAPS will rapidly become
one of TXAPA’s most important annual events. With the addition
of Jim Warren, whose diverse set of talents have the potential
to propel the Association to new media horizons, the mission
of education and training will receive full-time attention. The
creation of TXAPA’s beautiful new campus brings yet another
dimension to TXAPA’s mission. While we have yet to realize the
yield of this investment in our future, we do know there has
been a surge in training and certification demand from TxDOT.
Corley is confident that many other opportunities with smaller
jurisdictions will present themselves in the future. To that end,
the Training and Education Committee will collaborate with
other committees to explore what market potential exists now
for previously developed training.
