In 2019 the Quality Paving and New Technology Committee hosted the third annual Asphalt Road-eo Student Engineering Competition.
Thanks to the concerted efforts of the committee, its university partner, Dr. Amit Bhasin of the University of Texas at Austin, and the
high quality of the competition itself, word has spread beyond Texas. This year, the Road-eo attracted three out-of-state teams of
competitors to the TXAPA Campus in Buda, Texas. Newcomers Louisiana Tech walked away with first prize after a day of competition
which featured corporate recruiters, closed circuit coverage of the rutting and cracking tests, a social media competition, great food,
and many new friendships. By all measurements, the competition was a success, especially in the realm of showing young people
that working in the industry is both challenging and rewarding. To celebrate those already hard at work in the industry, the QP&NT
introduced a new Non-TXDOT Awards Program with nominations and evaluations revamped to be consistent with the TxDOT/TXAPA
Awards Program. To foster greater participation and raise awareness, Chair Josh Houston and the committee put out the call for
nominations much earlier than in years past. As a result, evaluators were able to rate the projects and announce the winners with
time to spare before the Quality Asphalt Pavement Awards Banquet. The committee’s Regular members helped accomplish another of
the committee’s 2019 goals: giving tours of their quarries, plants, and terminal facilities to help further educate customers about the
asphalt production process.
