THE MAGIC SHOP OLDWICK

Despite its Victorian setting and country charm, Howling Basset has a vibrant and contemporary vibe. Lisa, a PhD in English
at a nearby university, curates most of the books and while you’ll
readily find a selection of classics and an abundance of gift options, you’ll also discover plenty of exciting new titles to explore
in a wide range of popular as well as less mainstream categories,
including graphic novels and books by local authors.
“We try to carry all the new, more interesting items that come
up, rather than books that people can get at the library,” said
Zohar. “New independent creators and writers...We’re both interested in art and have an art background, so we’ve been trying to
build out our art section. Also, graphic novels. We’re really interested in experimental or really thoughtful graphic novels.”
“I’ve found that the books we’re selling the best, are the ones
that are nearer and dearer to me, that I got because I thought
‘now, that’s an amazing book,’” said Lisa. “People are not coming
in and buying the genre stuff as much.”
“Over and over again I hear, ‘Oh my god, you have that here!
Or, you have this person here!’” Zohar added. “Coming here and
browsing, you might find something that you never imagined.”
