meant filling ruts and gulleys after a storm. In summer, during
dry weather, dust was a necessary evil and had to be tolerated.
However, riding in the Overland was an improvement over the
horse and wagon except when the horse had to tow the car home.
Joseph also had the only toy steam engine in town which gave
us a great deal of pleasure. He also had a large express wagon to
which he hitched his collie dog who pulled us here and there on
the island where we lived. The wagon had a handle which could
be removed as well as the shaft.
I was introduced to corn silk and homemade corn cob pipes
by an older boy. Smoking was a lark which we enjoyed in the
woods. Reflecting back through the years I have reached the conclusion that I was a normal boy. My worse crime, if you could call
it a crime, was swiping an egg from a chicken nest and bartering
it at the store for a penny9s worth of candy. On several occasions
